Elevated Health is one of California's original Direct Primary Care practices. We opened in 2016, we've never billed insurance, and we publish our prices openly. Our tagline is “Affordable. Amazing. Accessible Healthcare,” and we've built the practice to live up to it.
We host osteopathic medical students from Touro University California and Western University of Health Sciences (COMP). We primarily take fourth-year students.
What makes this rotation different
Most clinical rotations focus on learning how to diagnose and treat patients. Here, you’ll also have a chance to see what happens behind the scenes of running a medical practice.
You’ll learn how a membership-based practice is structured and priced, how wholesale labs and medications work, what practice overhead actually looks like, and how an in-house pharmacy fits into the model. You’ll also see some of the operational side of opening and managing multiple locations and learn why physicians may choose Direct Primary Care instead of working within the traditional insurance system.
These are parts of medicine that aren’t always covered in medical school, but they can have a major impact on how physicians practice, how patients access care, and what it takes to build a sustainable practice.
If you’re interested in entrepreneurship or eventually opening your own practice, you’ll have opportunities to go deeper. But you don’t need to have those goals to get something out of this rotation.
Clinical time
Full clinical day at our Huntington Beach office — physical exams, membership visits, chronic disease management, aesthetics and Botox injections, and in-office procedures.
A mix of clinic in Irvine and the operational side of the business.
Through our affiliated organization, Rume Health, we run telehealth psychiatry and addiction medicine services with Anthony Brown (remote) and Aeli Hartmann (in clinic). We're adding ketamine therapy. If mental health or addiction medicine interests you, tell us and we'll get you involved — scribing and joining consultations. This track is largely remote, so it's a good fit if you want depth in behavioral health or need a lighter in-office footprint during interview season.
We work around interview season
We know fourth year means interviews, boards, and travel. Time away is accommodated. We ask that you tell us your conflicts up front rather than piecemeal, and that missed time is made up — through remote reading assignments with written reflections, remote presentations, or scribing on telehealth consultations.
What we ask of you
- A short weekly presentation — 2 slides / 2 minutes / 2 questions
- Reading on the DPC model (books provided or borrowed through your school library)
- Curiosity about how the business works
Optional, if you want it: we're always happy to support research and publications. And if you're seriously considering opening your own practice someday, you can write a business plan during the rotation — Dr. Matt will proofread it and be a sounding board.

Reach out to us first, then loop in your school's clinical education office. Once your dates are confirmed, we'll send you the password to our rotation details page with everything you need for your first day.

We have a very revolutionary model of healthcare delivery and we are passionate about family medicine. We work in a membership model of delivery called Direct Primary Care (DPC).
Refer to this page early and often.
Please find information about our rotation. Come back to this page when you have questions. This helps to offload our physicians from getting bombarded with procedural questions. It also helps you to know what to expect!

Books
While on the rotation it is expected that you will read a few books. You can borrow them from us (if available) or you may be asked to purchase them (links below). If you have an interest in possibly setting up a DPC practice someday, you will want these books anyway. There is also a possibility that we may be willing to buy them off you when you’re done…since our books have a tendency of walking away 🙂

location/parking
We are located on the 8th floor of Pacifica Tower in Huntington Beach. There are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area and we do have a breakroom with a large refrigerator if you prefer to bring your own food.

Check-In
Please email the Friday before your rotation begins to check in with us and get details for when to check in.
Please also email us with any scheduled conflicts in the schedule (interviews, trips, etc).
Our hours are: MWF 9-5 PM and TTh 8-4
Please do not show up before our hours. The doors are locked until we open and you’ll just be sitting in the hallway.
Things to bring
There will be a significant amount of downtime. Please bring a computer/tablet with you. Bring study materials/books, if desired.
