The Light at the End of the COVID-19 Tunnel

As the immediate threat of COVID-19 has lessened and crowd restrictions are easing up, many have had to face the intimate reality of his or her own mental health. Often referred to as mental capacity, mental health is the overall state at which an individual is. Since there is plenty of material regarding the improvement of an individual’s physical health, our team of family doctors here at Elevated Health wishes to share some things that may help improve your overall mental health. If anything, we hope these tips will help keep the mentally resilient firm in their strength.

“Life is about the journey, not the destination”  – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ask yourself, “How is the journey so far?”

How Do I Know Where My Mental Health Is?
Comparable to physical health, where the physical condition at the designated time of appointment is the baseline or starting point, the same assessment can be done for your mental health. If you record the answers to the questions below, you can better establish future goals. Similar to a hiking trail, mental health comes with ups and downs. At times it will rise and fall, but as long as there is an upward trend, you’re making true progress.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, good mental health is characterized by a person’s ability to fulfill the following key functions and activities. Ask yourself these simple questions:

What Is My…

  • ability to learn?
  • ability to feel, express, and manage a range of positive and negative emotions?
  • ability to form and maintain good relationships with others?
  • ability to cope with and manage change and uncertainty?

How Do I Improve – Can I?

First and foremost, the answer is YES.

Yes, you can improve, and this article and your direct physician or family doctor can help. Being realistic and honest with the previous questions will allow for your true path to emerge and show what improvements are most important. To get you started on the right path, let’s look at three key principles.

Three Key Principles to Grow Mental Firmness

#1. Remember

  • Remember what you currently have and be grateful for it. Remember the silver lining as there is always at least one.
  • Remember that you have strengths and to use them regularly.
  • Remember people – those whom you love and those you’ve recently met – and write them a note. Remember those who need your forgiveness and let go of that weight.

Finally, remember to smile and laugh. Being lighthearted helps lift the soul and encourages continued happiness. When looking back, troubles start to look smaller and challenges seem easier. When difficult days come, call on those exquisite memories and gifts to pull you out of that rut. As qualified as your family doctor may be, they can’t generate as much – or more – joy than cherished memories made with loved ones.

#2. Create

  • Create something new; there are always projects to do and finishing something is a total triumph.
  • Prepare for the next week as preparation is a form of creating.
  • Create an atmosphere of fun. Does dancing while doing chores or listening to good music sound uplifting? You don’t need a doctor’s prescription to have fun or be happy.

#3. Do

  • If all you see is a long climb ahead of you, take that first step. Don’t stress about the following steps.
  • Take a break in the middle of your workday (you could get up and stretch or even go outside for a walk).
  • Have that chocolate therapy session once in a while.
  • Get off the grid, get out into nature, and get some sun.
  • Share in others’ triumphs to show your support.
  • Spend time with your friends, family, or your pets.
