Concierge Medicine vs. Direct Primary Care

Healthcare comes in many different models. There is the traditional medical healthcare model, in which physicians see large numbers of patients a day and then bill insurance companies for their services. However, in the last couple of decades, two new models have become more popular: concierge medicine and direct primary care (DPC). Both share some similarities, but there are also major differences.

At their core, concierge and DPC work off a membership model either paid by the patient or sometimes the patient’s employer. Concierge clinics work off a national network of physicians and may bill the patient’s insurance companies for covered services. DPCs, on the other hand, are fiercely independent, small businesses who work directly for patients not insurance companies, hospitals, or corporations. This allows for total price transparency!

In both models, patients enjoy the individual attention and communication they deserve from their physicians. Physicians are also better able to focus on patient care with fewer distractions or burn out.
